You will hear people talk about peer support. At Newark MIND we encourage people with mental health problems to support others. Some of our volunteers have had or have ongoing mental health problems. When this type of support is facilitated we might refer to people as providing ‘peer support’. Someone with a similar experience to yours can have insights that are helpful or just be able to listen with real empathy towards your feelings and thoughts, because they would have had maybe the same experiences. Many of our groups are based on the principle of peer support.
